Dr. Joy's scholarship draws from both quantitative and qualitative methodologies to investigate practices and policies perpetuating inequitable access to education for emergent bilinguals who may or may not have disabilities. Complementary to these investigations, Dr. Joy has developed a model for guiding school leaders at all levels to practice critical consciousness. Currently she is pursuing these avenues through the support of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the California Commission on Teaching Credentials.

Caminos Teacher Residency for Bilingual Inclusive Educators
Mount Diablo Unified School District and KSOE Teacher Education Department received $250,000 for 2022-2024 to develop a Teacher Residency model for preparing Bilingual Elementary and Bilingual Special education teachers.
